Yesterday’s game was a welcome change from the Canucks previous three nail-biters where the game was decided by a single goal in either overtime or the shootout. And especially seeing as they were down a goal very early in the game, they showed great poise by staying with their game plan and not becoming unraveled as they battled back to win the game against a divisional rival with goals to spare. Hopefully this is the corner the Canucks needed to turn in order to get their game back on track for the stretch run to the playoffs. After giving up an early goal to the Minnesota Wild, the Vancouver Canucks buckled down, regrouped and played a very solid, well disciplined game to extend their winning streak to three games, and a 3-4 record on this road trip. The game started out with a shock as Dany Heatley surprised Cory Schneider by beating him 13 seconds after the opening puck drop. Final score 5-2 Canucks!

Craigslist scams 1 out of 7

beware of craigslist scams

In March of 2008, Fox News reported on a Craigslist hoax that cost one man almost everything he owned. In Jacksonville, Oregon, scammers posted prank ads on the website claiming that the person who lived at Robert Salisbury’s residence had to leave town suddenly, and that everything in his house was free for the taking. The problem is that Salisbury had no idea of any such ad and was not certainly not planning on moving anywhere. On his drive home he spotted a truck passing him loaded down with stuff from his house and garage. Surprised, Salisbury pulled them over to discover just what was going on. “I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give the stuff back,” Salisbury said. “They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did.” As he arrived home, Salisbury was greeted by 30 people ransacking his home, barn and garage, taking everything and anything they wanted. Eventually the police arrived on scene to break up the party, but by then too many people had already made their getaway.

Canucks Pavol Demitra reportedly killed in Russian plane crash

Pavol1

Pavol Demitra, a former Kings forward and a three-time NHL All-Star, was reportedly among the players killed in Wednesday’s crash of a jetliner carrying a Russian hockey team, his agent told the Toronto Globe and Mail.

The plane, which was carrying members of the Kontinental Hockey League team Lokomotiv, crashed  on the banks of the Volga River shortly  after departing from an airport in Yaroslav, located 150 miles northeast of Moscow. The team was flying to Belarus to play in its season opener against Dinamo Minsk.

Russian officials say a crew member and Russian player Alexander Galimov are the only survivors.

Eleven foreign players reportedly were onboard the jet. A Czech Embassy official said Czech players Josef Vasicek, Karel Rachunek and Jan Marek were among those killed.

Toady was a sad day for all hockey fans. The entire team of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL, flying to the 2011-2012 season opener, died in a plane crash near Yaroslavl, Russia. On-board the plane was former star of Vancouver Canucks, Slovak hockey player Pavol Demitra.

Demitra played for the Canucks for two years between 2008 and 2010.  He started playing professional hockey in 1992 and was drafted into the NHL by Ottawa Senators in 1993 already.  By these measures, he was a true Canadian, beginning and ending his career on the Eastern and Western coast, respectively.  He even played in an All-Stars game in Toronto in 2000.  To this day, Demitra is widely considered one of the best late round draft steals in NHL history.

While playing for the Canucks, Demitra suffered several injuries, but always recovered promptly and resumed playing in very short time.  He managed to score 20 goals and earn a total of 53 points in the first season alone.

Demitra was not only popular in Canada, but he was one of the best-loved hockey players in his wonderful home country of Slovakia. Slovakia is a relatively small country in central Europe and a birthplace to some of the best hockey players in the world, including famous NHL names like Peter Bondra, Zdeno Chára, Richard Zedník, Marián Gáborík, Lubomír Višnovský, Marián Hossa, and others.

The 2011 Ice Hockey World Championships (taking place in Bratislava, Slovakia and Košice, Slovakia) was Demitra’s last time partaking in the Slovak national team and representing his country as the team’s captain in this prestigious venue. After Slovakia’s last match in the Championship, Demitra received a long standing ovation and loud cheers from the entire audience in what was likely the most touching moment of this year’s Championship.

Demitra was an offensive player with exemplary manners that earned him a Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2000. He also received a Golden Puck, an award for Slovakia’s best hockey player, in 2003.  In the hearts of his fan, he will always be a legend thanks to his unparalleled play style and mature, non-violent game.

Pavol Demitra was an exceptional hockey artist who always enjoyed the respect of his team members. He is going to be deeply missed by all fans of great ice hockey.

Moving Insurance Plans

What Action Movers covers when you book with us:

When booking with Action Movers we include full coverage of your household goods. Like most companies, we cover the cargo insurance up to (.60 cents / lb) for each individual item. What stands different with our company than the rest, is we also include any repairs if an item is damaged. Many companies ask you to pay additional coverage to cover there costs, at Action Movers we feel if the mistake was made on our part, we will ensure your items are repaired better than before.

Because Action Movers deals with over 150 customers a month, over the past 11 years, we have grown to see and realize certain items or boxed goods are bound to be damaged in the process of moving. Below we have made a list of items that Action Movers does not cover.

What is not covered under our Insurance Plan

  1. Unwrapped Glass meaning glass not wrapped, boxed or crated.
  2. Standing Pole Lamps that are not unscrewed, disassembled, and placed in a sealed box.
  3. Particle Board or chip board like assembled kit furniture that is not disassembled and is not strong enough to safely move. These particle board pieces are so fragile and often they are not assembled correctly and are missing screws or have locking screws that were not locked making it impossible for us to take responsibility for its transport. Just by lifting it up an inch it may fall apart and is not reasonable for us to claim liablity.
  4. Owner packed cartons unless clear visable damage to the exterior of the carton is noted at time of delivery. It must be clearly due to transport and not due to poorly packed items within an owner packed box.
  5. Stamps, money, bank notes, legal papers, photographs or other extremely valuable items of like kind.
  6. Perishable goods including food as we can’t guarantee the temperature.
  7. Plants as we can’t guarantee a sensitive plant will survive transport.

Vancouver Moving Business on the Move

Business in Vancouver has recently featured our company, Action Movers in their upcoming issue July 5-11 2011 – FAMILY BUSINESS Section. Learn more about Action Movers and the owners, Mark & Bob Hirschi and how as a family company earn the respect, and loyal customer following they have gained in the past 3 years since taking over ownership.

Action Movers making a difference

Finding a job is a challenge for practically anyone in these difficult economic times. Employers seem to be increasingly selective on who they choose to hire, often wanting someone who can be a “Jack-of-all-trades” so that they can stretch their dollars. For job developers trying to find the ideal workplace for the individuals with disabilities they support, this adds to the complexity of securing these individuals real work for real pay.

Action Movers of Vancouver, BC stepped up to the plate by hiring a young man with a disability. Mark Hirschi, the Owner of Action Movers, was able to look past the disability label and see the strengths and skills that this young man possessed. It was an easy task for Mark to create a position for this young man that fit his ideal conditions of employment, which consisted of cleaning tasks around the office and yard, and unloading/loading trucks in warehouse settings.

For this young man with a disability, his job alone has increased his self-esteem and quality of life, expanded his social network, and given him the opportunity to feel that he is playing a meaningful role in our society.

For Action Movers, this was an easy task. If more employers could be open-minded to the possibility of hiring someone with a disability then we could truly make a difference in lives of thousands of individuals across BC.

Bailed us out on our moving day

Hi – We wanted to take this opportunity of expressing our sincere appreciation for making our recent move go so smoothly.

We contacted your company as a result of our movers not showing up on the Saturday.  We couldn’t believe it when we were advised not to worry – that your company could provide movers for the following day.  On the Sunday your movers Paul and Jonathan arrived on time and we can’t thank them enough for their hard work – smiling faces – and especially Paul’s clever ways of moving our large furniture out of our old place and into the new.  They were quick – efficient and friendly.  The took such great care of our art and bubble wrapped all our precious pieces.  Your company got us out of a really difficult situation.  Your cost estimate and the actual cost was as quoted.  It was a perfect move and we will certainly use your company the next time we move.  Huge thanks for a job well done.

Top 10 tips to avoid a stressful move

1. Get three written in-home estimates. Our Action Movers garauntee is to provide you with a competitive price, professional moving, and ‘white glove’ treatment from the moment you call our office.  Even though we won ‘consumer choice award’ for Best moving Company in 2010, we still want you to find 2 other moving companies and get there pricing. When having an inhouse estimate, show the mover everything that will be moved, including items in attics, basements, garages, storage areas, sheds, etc. Typically two of the estimates will be very close together in price, weight, and service. Select one of those two estimates. The other bid will be very high or low. Avoid that carrier.

2. Obtain and read the three “pre-move” required documents from your carrier.
These documents include: Your Rights and Responsibilities and Ready to Move brochures, and information on the arbitration program that the carrier participates in.
These documents are all required for every interstate shipment.

3. Avoid large down payments. Be wary of carriers seeking large down payments to hold dates or to reserve service. With Action Movers, we do not take deposits unless you are moving long distance.

4. Ask questions. If you do not understand something, ask. The moving business is complex and has its own language. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers to your questions or if the carrier hesitates when you ask for clarification, talk to another carrier.

5. Plan an Off-Peak Season Move (when possible). June to September is the high season. If you can avoid moving during those months, you will likely receive better service. If you must move during the high season, move mid-month, mid-week, and avoid the end of the month.

6. Be Reachable by Phone. Make sure our movers are able to reach you on the day of the move. This can save time and storage costs if the driver is ready to deliver and you ready to receive the shipment. Be sure to have the driver’s full name, id and truck number to allow for fast and easy communication.

7. Take Valuables with You. Valuables, such as cash, coins, jewelry, photographs, and important papers should be taken with you or sent ahead. Be sure to use a traceable service, such as FedEx and United Parcel Service.

8. Segregate Personal Travel Items. The items traveling with you, such as clothes and papers, should be put in one place or in the vehicle you are taking with you.
Avoid having those items loaded on the truck and having to find them later.

9. Try to Relax. No matter how prepared you are things occasionally go wrong. Moving is one of the most stressful times in your life. Take a deep breath, be patient, and get a good night’s sleep before moving day.

10. Go with the Pro’s. Every day another moving company pops up and its generally an ex-employee from a vanline or small moving company trying to make it on there own. The problem is, many dont have the funds to operate a ligit company, with no insurance, non-bondable, and if something goes wrong….. they will hold your stuff until they get paid, or not show up on the moving date because they were offered a higher hourly rate after booking with you. Choose Action Movers for your next household move or commercial move, and have a family owned, insured and bonded, reliable moving company.
